KILMARNOCK—Constance “Connie” Dawson, 83, of Kilmarnock passed away peacefully on August 16, 2024.
She was born on October 30, 1940, to Charlotte Sampson and Carlyle Clarke. Connie was a graduate of Northumberland High School and Massey Business College.
Connie is survived by her husband of 62 years, Edward Dawson; her children, William Carlyle Dawson (Kirsten) of Williamsburg, Christie Dawson of Lancaster and Shannon Smith (Bill) of Weems. She also leaves behind seven beloved grandchildren, Colie Haydon (Celina), Cassie Lewis (Dexter), Drew Smith, Blake Smith, Blair Smith, Jack Dawson and Kaallie Dawson; and two great-grandchildren, Case Haydon and Collin Lewis.
The family is grateful for the wonderful caregivers that were part of her life over the past year, Doretha Weldon and Cherell Owens.
Connie grew up in Glebe Point and always enjoyed being on the water. In her youth, she won many beauty contests, including Miss Virginia State Fair in 1955. She was active in church and especially enjoyed singing in the choir. Later, she taught Sunday School, was a Girl Scout leader and volunteered at the local hospital. Other than cooking for, and being with her family, her greatest enjoyment was serving her community through Dawson’s Ltd.
Friends were received from noon-1 p.m. Wednesday, August 21, at Morattico Baptist Church, Kilmarnock, with a memorial service at 1 p.m. and a reception immediately following. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to Morattico Baptist Church, or the American Stroke Association (www.stroke.org).
Currie Funeral Home LLC of Kilmarnock handled the arrangements.
