HEATHSVILLE—At its September 19 meeting, the Northumberland planning commission voted to move forward with a public hearing on a proposed prohibition of solar generating facilities within three-quarters-of-a-mile of tidal waters in the county. If approved by supervisors, it would prohibit solar generating facilities in 110 square miles or 57% of the county. Residential solar would not be affected.
Supervisor Richard Haynie said, “That’s our major growth area for development. A lot of it already is developed with housing and some of it is prime farmland. We don’t need to lose it to solar.”
The commission voted 6-2 in favor of holding a public hearing at its October 17 meeting….
