Northumberland Distinguished Citizen Award presented to animal shelter staff and volunteers

HEATHSVILLE—The Northumberland Association for Progressive Stewardship (NAPS) presented the 2024 Northumberland Distinguished Citizen Award to the Northumberland County Animal Shelter (NCAS) and Friends of the Northumberland County Animal Shelter (FNCAS).

Shelter manager Gabby Vaculovicova accepted the award on behalf of NCAS and FNCAS at the NAPS annual fall social Sunday, October 27, at the Tavern Meeting Building in Heathsville.

Vaculovicova praised her staff, the county animal control officer, and the many volunteers of FNCAS.

“It takes a village” to rescue, care for and find homes for the many animals that come through the shelter, she said. Most of the building maintenance also is performed by volunteers.

Many rural shelters are dark, uninviting places, but thanks to the efforts of the “village,” NCAS is bright and….
