Middlesex and Mathews lead the local harriers at state meet

Middlesex and Mathews high schools of the Tidewater District on Saturday, November 16, led Region A teams in the Virginia High School League state cross country meet in Blacksburg.

Mathews scored 94 points as the state runner-up in the girls 3.1 mile race on the course at Virginia Tech, while the Mathews boys team scored 89 points to finish third.

The Middlesex boys team, led by Cameron Lambert, placed fourth with 141 points. Lambert had the best finish among Region A harriers with a time of 17:01.70 for seventh place among 101 runners. Josh Woolard of Lancaster ran the race in 17:08.10 to place ninth overall. Woolard was the only Red Devils runner to qualify for the state race.
