School playground discussion continues

HEATHSVILLE—Northumberland Elementary School principal Martha Williams on Thursday, November 14, again asked supervisors to approve plans for a new playground at the elementary school.

At the September meeting, Williams presented a single bid for a new playground, totaling $567,000, for grading, drainage work, rubber surfacing and playground equipment. Williams provided additional quotes in October at the request of supervisors, but it is still not clear how much is being requested by the schools.

At Thursday’s meeting Williams urged supervisors to act since playground equipment manufacturers would be increasing prices by 20% in January. “It makes these bids null and void” after December, she said.

In September, Tara Booth said it was possible to apply some unexpended funds from the 2024 budget towards the playground, but she did not have an exact number. Booth reiterated on Thursday that she is “completely confident there are funds to cover the playground” in the reimbursements but will not know an exact amount until the annual audit is….
