RICHMOND—It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joyce Marie Byrne, 84, of Richmond. Joyce passed away peacefully on November 26, 2024, surrounded by her loving family.
Born on March 25, 1940, in Utica, New York, Joyce was the beloved daughter of Michael and Martha Solnica. She lived a life full of love, kindness and generosity. She was the devoted wife of Robert D. Byrne Sr., her loving partner of 61 years. Together, they built a beautiful family, raising three children, Robert Byrne Jr., Richard “Rick” Byrne and Jacquelyn Byrne.
Joyce worked for many years as an ultrasonographer at Johnston-Willis Hospital, where her care and compassion made her a trusted colleague and friend. She also devoted time to volunteering at Rappahannock General Hospital, extending her commitment to serving others beyond her career.
Fondly known as “The Cake Lady,” Joyce loved baking and was especially skilled at creating beautifully decorated cakes that delighted coworkers and family alike. She was also famous for her delicious cereal mix, a family favorite that she shared at every gathering, making each one a little sweeter.
Joyce’s kindness, warmth and sense of humor touched everyone she met. Her love for her family, friends and community will be remembered and cherished by all who knew her.
She leaves behind her beloved husband, Robert; her three children; her extended family, including eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; and countless friends who will miss her dearly. Joyce’s legacy of love, generosity and joy will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know her.
In accordance with her wishes, a small private service will be held for family only. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations be made in Joyce’s honor to the VCU ALS Clinic, an organization close to her heart.
