LOTTSBURG—Jesse “Steve” Thomas Sr., 88, of Lottsburg went home to be with the Lord on March 14, 2025.

Steve passed peacefully at home surrounded by family. Born in Heathsville on the family farm to the late Jesse Pearson Thomas and the late Ruth Stevens Thomas. Steve was the beloved husband of Phyllis Riley Thomas. He attended the Richmond Professional Institute. Steve was a retired Circuit Court Clerk for Northumberland County and a member of Coan Baptist Church.

Being of service was the hallmark of almost everything Steve did. He began his career with ConTel Telephone Company and then was elected to positions in Northumberland County, where he served as the Commissioner of the Revenue for 12 years. He was then elected to Circuit Court Clerk, where he served for 31 years, until his retirement.

Steve sat on the board of directors for Northern Neck Electric, and he was an active Mason and member of the Heathsville Lodge 109 Acca Temple Shrine. Steve was always ready to lend a hand or an ear. He also enjoyed bird hunting and gardening.

The role Steve loved best, however, was that of family man. He and Phyllis were married for 68 years and together they raised their children and delighted in their grandchildren. Steve was thrilled when he became a great-grandfather when Reghan was born. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather and we will miss him terribly.

Left to cherish Steve’s memory are his loving wife, Phyllis; his adoring children, Todd E. Thomas (Stacy) and Deborah T. Bingham (Chris); his grandchildren, Chris Thomas, Amanda Casebolt, Jessica Thomas, Thomas Bingham, Phillip Bingham and James Thomas; and his precious great-granddaughter, Reghan Thomas.

Welcoming him into heaven are his beloved son Jesse “Stevie” Thomas Jr.; his parents, Jesse and Ruth; and his infant brother, Edwin Thomas.

A funeral service for Steve will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 20, at Coan Baptist Church, with the Reverend Lee Farmer officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church and following the service Steve will be laid to rest in the Coan Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made in Steve’s loving memory to either the American Cancer Society at www.cancer.org, or to Coan Baptist Church, P.O. Box 156, Heathsville, VA 22473.
