Six Northern Neck baseball players make all-state team

The Northern Neck District had three players named to the Virginia High School League’s Class 1 all-state baseball first team and filled another three spots on the second team.

Rappahannock, which finished as the Region 1A champion and a state semifinalist, named two to the first team in senior pitcher Brayden Hayes and junior second baseman Carter Sullivan.

Northumberland sophomore third baseman Camden Brann also was named to the first team. NHS was the regional runner-up and also a Class 1 semifinalist.

Junior pitcher JP Withers of Northumberland made the state’s second team along with junior catcher Chase Self of Rappahannock and senior outfielder Hunter Byrd of Essex.

Auburn senior first baseman and pitcher Zac McGlothlin was named the Class 1 player of the year and Auburn coach Eric Altizer was elected coach of the year. The Eagles won the state championship with a convincing 10-0 win over Fort Chiswell. Auburn ended the season on a 17-game winning streak with a 26-1 record and edged Rappahannock, 3-2, in the semifinals.

Fort Chiswell got by Northumberland, 4-1, in the state semifinals.
