IRVINGTON—While Irvington continues to review residential land uses including apartments, tourist homes and dwellings, town council on Thursday, December 11, granted a permit for additional classroom and lodging space above an existing business.
Elizabeth Lee Taylor of SewLoveLee, 4504 Irvington Road, applied for a conditional use permit (CUP) to construct a classroom space with guest rooms on the second level for students and teachers from out of town to stay when they teach or participate in a class offered at her business.
During initial discussion, Wayne Nunnally asked what makes this set-up any different from an apartment. He said that using words like “guest rooms” doesn’t change the fact that it’s an apartment.
“What good are rules if we don’t follow them,” Nunnally said.
Mary Cary Bradley noted that the CUP isn’t for a short-term rental, but is an extension of Taylor’s existing business.
Bradley moved to approve the CUP with the stipulation that rentals are limited to events held by the business and only for attendees or teachers….
