The Northumberland County Animal Shelter is as resilient as the roughly 400 vulnerable animals that come through the doors needing help every year.
Take a walk around the aging building at 11703 Northumberland Highway near Horse Head and one can see the growing needs of the shelter. The mostly 25-year-old building has been added to over time to make room for more animals and the support they need—the plumbing is past its useful life and the years of water and chemicals have etched floors and walls as well as rusted kennel doors.
Despite these hardships, the 50 or so animals that live there at any given time are cared for and the shelter is celebrating its 10th year as a “no kill” shelter. That means that “at least 90% of animals are adopted or saved,” said shelter manager Gabby Vaculovicova. “We’re very proud that….
