Rainy day patrol reveals boat ramp violations in Northumberland County

FLEETON—On March 16, Virginia Conservation Police Officer (CPO) Kenneth Fisher and Sgt. Andrew “Kyle” Jones were conducting a patrol of Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources (DWR) properties in Northumberland County.

While patrolling the DWR boat ramp at Shell Landing, the CPOs observed a suspicious vehicle. Upon making contact with the vehicle operator, CPO Fisher immediately realized the individual was not at the boat ramp for the purposes of fishing or launching a boat.

The individual was observed with an open bottle of alcohol and appeared intoxicated. While determining the level of impairment, it was also discovered the individual’s driver’s license was suspended. CPO Fisher charged the individual with public intoxication and transported him to the Northumberland County Sheriff’s Office.

The individual also was charged with violating posted rules and was booked into the Northern Neck Regional Jail. The Northumberland County Sheriff’s Office provided mutual aid.

Virginia Conservation Police reminds the public that DWR boat ramps are for boating and fishing, and are provided for this purpose only. Camping, swimming, sunbathing, loitering, or any other use of the property, other than launching or retrieving boats and/or fishing is prohibited and considered trespassing. Public display of alcoholic beverages also is prohibited.

Reminder, those charged with alleged crimes are presumed innocent until proven guilty beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
