EDWARDSVILLE—Albert Davis “Dave” Bugg Jr. of Edwardsville passed away peacefully at his home on Sunday, April 5, 2026, just before sunrise over the Potomac on a glorious Easter morning, following a recent and thankfully brief struggle with acute leukemia.
He is survived by his best friend and loving wife of 51 years, Margaret Bradley “Peggy” Bugg; their son and his law partner, Albert Davis “Tripp” Bugg III (wife, Adrianne; children, Davis and Anna); their daughter, Patricia Bugg “PJ” Turner (husband, David; children, Avery, Bradley, and Emma); his brother, Bryce Avery Bugg (wife, Nancy Schneider Bugg); his sister-in-law, Susan Bradley “Susie” Boutilier; and his brother-in-law, Charles Austin Pritchard Jr. Also surviving are his nieces and nephews, Finley Bugg White (husband, Chris); Charles Austin Pritchard III (wife, Sarah); Barrett Upshur Pritchard; Margaret Boutilier “Peggy” Williams (husband, Tim); and Richard Bradley “Brad” Boutilier (wife, Lindsey).
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Virginia Bradley “Ginny” Bugg; his parents, Dr. Albert Davis Bugg and Bonnalynn Avery “Bonnie” Bugg; his sister, Bonnalynn Bugg “Lynn” Pritchard; his in-laws, Richard “Dick” Bradley VI and Agnes Johns “Mimi” Bradley; and his brother-in-law, Warren F. “Boot” Boutilier.
Dave was born on August 2, 1948, in Richmond. He graduated from Christchurch School in 1967, Davidson College in 1971, and the University of Richmond School of Law in 1975. At Davidson, he was a member of the Kappa Sigma Fraternity. During his senior year, he met the love of his life, Peggy, a freshman at Queens College.
Following law school, where Dave was a member of the Law Review, he and Peggy were married and lived in Richmond until 1982. They then moved to the Northern Neck of Virginia, into a log cabin they built together, quite literally, with their own two hands. Edwardsville was where he had spent his summers as a child and where he chose to remain for the rest of his life.
Specializing in civil litigation and representing both plaintiffs and defendants, Dave built a highly regarded legal career over 50 years. In Richmond, Dave was a partner at the law firm of Sands Anderson. Upon moving to the Neck, he joined the law firm of Dunton, Simmons & Dunton in White Stone, then helped form Rumsey, Breeden, Hubbard, Bugg & Terry, and, in 1994, Rumsey & Bugg in Irvington. He was a former president of the Northern Neck Bar Association.
He served on the vestry and as senior warden of St. Mary’s Episcopal Church in Fleeton and later became a member of Wicomico Parish Church.
A beloved husband, father, grandfather and friend to many, Dave will be remembered for his true love of life and family, his wit, integrity and wise counsel, and his larger-than-life heart. Among his passions were driving fast (both on land and at sea), running the marshes in his antique Whirlwind boat, frequenting Vermont, music, history, cocktail hour, his awe-inspiring HO scale model railroad layout, snow skiing (always fast), his view of the Potomac, watching storms approach (and, more often than not, outrunning them), studying the weather, and sharing these adventures and his knowledge with the family and friends he so adored.
His family is comforted knowing that he has joined so many loved ones who went before him in a kingdom where radar detectors are not needed, no-wake zones don’t exist, and the water is always glass.
A service celebrating his life will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, April 17, at Wicomico Parish Church in Wicomico Church. A reception at Indian Creek Yacht & Country Club will immediately follow the service. A private interment service will be held at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond on Saturday, April 18. Memorial donations may be made to the Wicomico Parish Church Endowment Fund, PO Box 70, Wicomico Church, VA 22579.
Currie Funeral Home LLC of Kilmarnock handled the arrangements.
