Anne Winters D. Haynie

Anne Winters D. Haynie

REEDVILLE—Anne Winters D. Haynie of Reedville passed away at home on Monday, April 1, 2024.

A dear friend once said, “Anne Winters was the epitome of Southern womanhood—kind, gracious, talented, and beautiful. She was a delight to know, and I admired her unerring sense of good taste and beauty.”

Anne Winters was predeceased by her devoted husband, Wendell G. Haynie; her sister, Betsy Layman; and her parents, Anne O. and Buck Davis.

She is survived by her three daughters, Gayle Sterrett (John), Becky Haynie and Carol Cummings (Mike); her four grandchildren, Nick Sterrett (Becca), Jessie Sterrett (Meredith), Taylor Cummings Danseglio (Greg) and Kelsey Cummings Wilmer (Matt); and three great-grandchildren, Elise and Alec Sterrett and Sawyer Danseglio; and numerous devoted nephews and nieces.

Born in 1935, Anne Winters graduated from Reedville High School, now Festival Halle, and Mary Washington College. She received her master’s of administration and supervision from Virginia Commonwealth University. Anne Winters lived almost the entirety of her life in Reedville, where she taught generations of local families at Reedville, Fairfields and Northumberland Elementary Schools.

Anne Winters began her teaching career in Richmond, while supporting her family, so that her husband, Wendell, could attend pharmacy school. She touched countless lives as a dedicated, caring teacher and truly loved working with children. Teaching with her friend and classroom partner, Queen Jordon, was a special joy to her, filled with laughter, fun, and stories to share.

In addition to her professional accomplishments, Anne Winters was a devoted mother and grandmother, always intensely interested in the lives of her children and grandchildren. She loved flowers, interior decorating and shopping, with a particular talent for color and design. Raised in a waterman’s family, she delighted in boat rides and rested best to the rocking of the waves on a boat.

Anne Winters was a longtime member of the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum and the Garden Club. She spent a lot of her time with her oldest friends, Faye Pittman and Phyllis Neale. She had a wide circle of friends and a very active social life.

Anne loved to travel and for many years convinced Wendell to travel the world with her. The last few years of their life together, they were most content living on Cockrells Creek looking out over the water and just being together. Their love affair never ended and she missed him terribly following his passing in December 2020 until the day she died. It is comforting to her family that they are once again united.

Memorial plans are postponed until the weather improves and a proper celebration of life and love of Anne Winters and Wendell can be observed. In lieu of flowers, we encourage donations to the Reedville Fishermen’s Museum, the Smith Point Sea Rescue, the Northumberland Rescue Squad, or the Fairfields Volunteer Fire Department.

Currie Funeral Home LLC of Kilmarnock handled the arrangements.
