Authorities recover bodies of men missing on Rappahannock River

At approximately 9:20 a.m. today, May 23, a call was received that a body had been located in the Mosquito Point area. 

The Lancaster County Sheriff’s Office, Lancaster County Emergency Services (LCES),Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC) and Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries (VDGIF) responded, reported the LCES.

At 9:45 a.m., the body was located and confirmed to be that of a a male showing similarities to that of Mark Ringenberg, who was reported missing on Sunday afternoon, May 19. The body was recovered and sent to the Virginia Office of the Chief Medical Examiner (VOCME) for a positive identification and a cause of death investigation.

At approximately 11:15 a.m., VMRC located a second body in the area of Mosquito Island. The body was recovered by members of VMRC and VDGIF. At 12:15 p.m., the body was brought to shore and confirmed to be that of Dr. Stephen Perkins, who also was reported missing on Sunday afternoon. Dr. Perkns’ body also was sent to the VOCME for a cause of death of investigation.

Both of the victims’ families have been notified.

Lancaster County authorities offers their condolences to the family and friends of both victims. Lancaster County would like to thank the VMRC, the U.S. Coast Guard, VDGIF and all others who assisted with the search and recovery of these men.
