Back to school brings Russells to the roadside

HEATHSVILLE—As Northumberland County students began the 2023-24 school year Monday, August 14, Diana and Jim Russell greeted students with friendly waves and decorative posters outside of their Heathsville home.

The Russells began the tradition of waving to students each morning last year and were excited to greet children, teachers and any other commuters this year.

The Russells have four grandkids in the Northumberland school system. According to Jim, last year they wanted to cheer up one of their grandkids after a bad day so they were outside their home to wave to her as she was en route to school. It made her and her friends so happy, Jim said, that he and Diana incorporated it into their daily routine.
