HEATHSVILLE—Barbara Joan Angevine Mitchell of Heathsville departed this life on November 27, 2021.
The oldest child of Woodrow Wilson Angevine and Sarah Jeannette Lewis Angevine, Joan was born on December 25, 1936, in Ophelia, at the home of her grandparents, James Leonard Lewis Sr. and Esther Rebecca Smith Lewis, and she resided there until her marriage.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 66 years, James Donald Mitchell; and her brother, James Woodrow Angevine.
Joan is survived by three sons, Stephen Donald Mitchell (Judy), James Kirk Mitchell (Libbie) and Brett Nelson Mitchell; six grandchildren, Justin Mitchell (Kristin), Scott Mitchell (Brittany), Lauren Mitchell, Blayne Mitchell, Tyler Mitchell, Hannah Mitchell; and 10 great-grandchildren. She leaves behind her sister, Madeline Angevine Gough; two brothers, William Angevine (Nancy) of California and Ronald Angevine (Dorthy) of Minnesota; and two nieces, Angela Kelly (Ford) and Terry Keyser (Philip); as well as dear friends, Jae George and her cousin, Deborah Whittaker; and many other cousins and friends.
Known for her friendliness and sense of humor, Joan will be missed by many.
Joan established temporary, comfortable homes for her husband who was a menhaden fishboat captain and their sons during the many fishing seasons in Greenport (Long Island), New York, and Cameron, Lake Charles and Morgan City, Louisiana. At the end of every fishing season, the Mitchells returned to Hacks Neck.
Afton United Methodist Church in Ophelia was Joan’s lifelong church.
A graveside service will be held a 2 p.m. Friday, December 3, at Roseland Cemetery, Reedville.
