The Northern Neck Chapter of the National Audubon Society will hold its sixth Christmas Bird Count on December 14. Co-sponsors include the Northern Neck Chapters of the Virginia Native Plant Society and Virginia Master Naturalists.
This count is the longest continuous citizen science project in North America. What began with 26 people counting birds in 25 localities in eastern North America expanded to over 70,000 people counting birds in over 3,000 localities in all of North America last year.
A count involves counting as many birds as you can in a 15-mile diameter circle. The center of the circle is between Kilmarnock and Wicomico Church, so the area stretches from Reedville to Irvington and the Chesapeake Bay to just west of Lancaster….
