Blessing of the Fleet slated

Above, the commercial fleet gathers for a previous ceremony. On Sunday, a parade of commercial and recreational boats will begin at 3:30 p.m. from the mouth of Cockrell’s Creek. The service will begin at 4 p.m. The blessing marks the opening of the fishing season on the Chesapeake Bay.

The 54th annual Blessing of the Fleet will be held on May 17 at the old Morris-Fisher Factory Tall Stack on the Omega Protein Property, 610 Menhaden Road, Reedville.

A boat parade will begin at 3:30 p.m. at the mouth of Cockrell Creek and the Great Wicomico River. The service will begin at 4 p.m. The speaker will be Taylor Deihl, chairman of the Virginia Marine Products Board.
