Mathews broke an eight-year losing streak to Lancaster last Friday, outlasting the homestanding Red Devils, 15-14, in a penalty- and mistake-ridden varsity football game.
In all, there were seven turnovers and 19 penalties. Lancaster, in its home opener, was flagged 13 times for 90 yards, almost as many yards on penalties as the Red Devils had on total offense. LHS finished with 140 yards including 73 yards passing and 67 rushing.
On paper, the Blue Devils weren’t much better. MHS had 186 yards of offense including 79 passing and 107 running.
