Blue Devils scrap Red Devils’ postseason hopes

Mathews scored two goals in less than 30 seconds midway through the second half last Wednesday to eliminate Lancaster from postseason play in boys soccer.

The Tidewater District’s player of the year, Miles Maggioncalda, had a hat trick and an assist to lead the host Blue Devils over LHS, 5-1, in the Region A tournament first round match. Mathews advanced to a quarterfinal match against Rappahannock.

Jonny McCann and Austen Wood added a goal each for the Blue Devils and Carson Brown had two assists.

Lancaster started strong, with Henry Smith scoring a goal on a throw-in from Nicklaus Ford 25 seconds into the match. Mathews shut the LHS offense down after that…
