Boys & Girls Club to host ‘Reach for the Stars’ dinner

The Boys & Girls Club of the Northern Neck (BGCNN) recently announced a Reach for the Stars benefit dinner on October 25.

The keynote speaker will be Dr. Christine Mann Darden, a retired NASA aeronautical engineer, data analyst and mathematician featured in Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race. The book was the basis for a 2016 film that received three Academy Award nominations.

At the dinner, Dr. Darden will tell how she overcame obstacles to achieve her career dreams and will respond to questions from BGCNN youth, as well as from members of the audience, reported event coordinator Margaret Cobb.

To prepare for Dr. Darden’s visit, BGCNN youth are reading a junior version of Hidden Figures, participating in a writing contest and drafting questions to ask Dr. Darden. The BGCNN choir is rehearsing two songs.

In anticipation of this event, the public is invited to join youth and parents at free popcorn and movie nights where the movie will be screened. Screenings are scheduled at 7 p.m. October 5 and 19, at the BGCNN Activity Center, 517 North Main Street, Kilmarnock…
