Charlotte E. Floyd

Charlotte E. Floyd

REEDVILLE—God called Charlotte Evans Floyd home on June 29, 2025, after she had celebrated her 100th birthday on December, 10, 2024, with family and friends.

She was born in Reedville on December 10, 1924, to Nannie Haynie Evans and Hilton Clayborne Evans.

She was predeceased by her first husband, Benjamin Douglas, and her second husband, Julian Jentus Floyd (the great love of her life); her sister, Col. Nannie Rudd Evans of San Antonio; and her brother, Hilton C. (Red) Evans Jr. of Reedville.

She leaves behind her niece, Ellen Evans Morey (John) of Fort Myers, Fla.; and great nephews, John Michael Morey Jr. of Ashburn and Robert Hilton Morey of Virginia Beach.

She graduated from Reedville High School where she achieved the distinction of being the salutatorian of her class in 1942. She began working at the local bank and received several promotions, but wanted to continue her education.

She met with Dr. Duke of Madison College (James Madison University) in Harrisonburg and was admitted to the secretarial program. While at Madison, she joined the Psi Chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau National Sorority in December 1947.

She moved to northern Virginia in 1948 where she began her career as a secretary for the Army Corps of Engineers and then the US Geological Survey and finally staff assistant to the Legislative Council, Secretary of the Interior. When she began her career with the US government, she was a GS-4 and she retired a GS-13. This was a great achievement for a woman at that time. In 1971, she was privileged to attend a retreat with officials from the Department of the Interior at Camp David, the Presidential Retreat.

Charlotte joined the PSI Chapter of Alpha Sigma Tau National Sorority in 1947. The friendships she made continued beyond graduation and continued throughout her life. She joined the Northern Virginia Alumnae Chapter upon arriving in Washington, D.C. area. Charlotte served in many leadership roles both within the alumnae chapter and on the national level of the sorority.  She was president of the alumnae chapter and also served as the alumnae chapter delegate to the Washington DC/Northern Virginia Alumnae Panhellenic. She served in the Alpha Sigma Tau National Council as National Secretary from 1972-1980.

Charlotte along with Sybil King, a former National President of the sorority, worked to found the AST National Foundation Inc., which awards scholarships and provides funding for alumnae and undergraduate members of the sorority.

Charlotte was also involved with Zonta International Club and volunteered at Arlington Hospital, helped deliver Meals on Wheels and was appointed to the President’s Council of JMU.  Charlotte was known as “the hostess with the mostest” as she annually held meetings, dinners and celebrations at her home.

Her walls are decorated with the many awards that she received from AST: Alumnae Top Tau 1996, 2016; Order of the Yellow Rose 1996, 2012; Centennial Convention Chairman 1998-2000.

The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Lucienne Lam and Margaret Martin as friends and caregivers for many years.

Many people have asked her what was the secret to her longevity and her response was “One of my greatest joys is entertaining my friends in my home.”

A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. July 11 at National Memorial Park, 7482 Lee Hwy, Falls Church, VA 22042. Wes Harris of Fairfax Baptist Temple will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Charlotte’s memory to: Alpha Sigma Tau Sorority National Foundation, Inc., Charlotte Evans Floyd Society, 3334 Founder’s Road, Indianapolis, IN 46268.
