Cornelia “Connie” M. Cockrell

WICOMICO CHURCH—Cornelia “Connie” M. Cockrell of Wicomico Church passed away on Monday, January 15, 2024. She was born on August 2, 1929, to Walter Cleveland and Anna Newcomb Marston of Shacklefords.

Following her graduation from Longwood College, she taught school in Essex and Northumberland counties. After raising her family, she worked for the Department of Social Services in Northumberland County.

Connie was a member of and pianist for Wicomico Baptist Church where she also taught Sunday school and served in the Women’s Missionary Union. She was a member of the Northumberland County Woman’s Club, served on their board, and was also a member of the Northumberland County Historical Society.

Connie was preceded in death by her father; mother; and brother, John Harvie Marston; as well as her husband, Edgar Mason Cockrell. 

She is survived by her daughter, Anna Blackwell Ransone (Mal) of White Stone; son, William Claughton Blackwell III (Sandy) of Richmond; six grandchildren, Margaret Ransone, Andrew Ransone, Laura Ransone, Will Blackwell (Laura), Carolyn Blackwell Dorton (Chatham) and Jenna Blackwell Pittman (Jason); and five great-grandchildren.

The family received friends from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, January 17, at Currie Funeral Home in Kilmarnock. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday, January 18, at Wicomico Baptist Church.
