Curtis L. Sampson

WEEMS—Curtis Lester Sampson, 99, of Weems died Sunday, April 21, 2024. He was born in Mila on May 5, 1924, the son of William Thomas and Susie Dawson Sampson.

He was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Willie, Leo and Glenwood Sampson.

He is survived by nieces, Diane Sampson Luttrell, Natalie Sampson Norris and husband Harry, Sue Sampson and Linda Sampson Druin, as well as six grandnieces and nephew; and 13 great-grandnieces and nephews; and countless friends throughout the community.

He was an antique collector and dealer, authority on sterling silver, avid gardener and faithful member of Kilmarnock United Methodist Church.

He was part of the original staff at The Tides Inn in 1947 and remained there until his retirement. Robert L. Stephens said, “Perhaps no one employee cared as much for us as a family, The Tides Inn, and our success as Curtis Sampson.”

He loved arranging flowers and shared his talent at The Tides Inn, his church and Historic Christ Church.

He loved the Northern Neck where he was born and raised and his last dreams were of being on a dock watching the water.

Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Wednesday, April 24, at Kilmarnock United Methodist Church with Rev. Penny Cory and Rev. Donna Blythe officiating. Interment was at Mila United Methodist Church Cemetery. Friends called from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, April 23, at Currie Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Kilmarnock United Methodist Church, Mila Methodist Church, or Animal Welfare League in Kilmarnock.
