Daddy’s little ‘big’ helper

Carlie is 8 years old. She is accompanying her dad, Cory Rice, on this sunny Saturday as he runs errands. One of those errands includes having a fuel line repaired on his boat. Cory needs his boat to do his job as an independent commercial waterman—crabbing and oystering.

Cory has videos on his phone of little Carlie sorting oysters and crabs. She’s quick and adept at tossing the undersized crabs back in the water. Amazing to see her little arms work so quickly. She likes to sleep in but has risen at 3 a.m. to go out on the boat to help her dad.

Carlie has a brother a couple years younger named Emory who will go out on the workboat sometime soon. He is named after Cory. Officially Emory Carl Rice V. Yes, you heard that right, he is the fifth in a long line of Rice men. Although Cory goes by his nickname, he is the fourth.

Cory’s dad is the chief fish spotter and has worked for Omega since graduating high school in 1976. Cory’s grandfather owned Jennings Railway which built and repaired boats. After his grandfather sold the….
