KILMARNOCK—Charles Lee Ashburn, a lifelong waterman, passed away peacefully at home on June 17, 2026, surrounded by his family, after a brief battle with cancer. Joining him in heaven on June 17 was his son, Darryl Buford Ashburn-Armstrong.
Charles was born on May 28, 1969, at Tappahannock Hospital to the late Julius Ashburn and Sarah Dodson Ashburn. He lived and worked on the Rappahannock River, finding his greatest joy during oyster season. Yet, he was also known as a true jack of all trades-a handy, capable man who could fix or build anything he set his mind to. His tireless work ethic and respect for the water were matched only by his incredible passion for his family. He was a beloved father and proudest grandfather around.
Charles is survived by his wife, Dianna Armstrong; daughter, Stephanie (Justin); and grandchildren, Isabella and Charles S. Lee. He is also survived by his brother, David Wayne Ashburn (Corrie) and their children, James (Kristen) and their son Gunner, Brittany and her son Wilder, and Kelsi (Jason) and their son Jackson; his other brother, Chris Ashburn (Tracy) and their children, Welford Jr., Jordan and Phillip; his brother-in-law, Darryl Armstrong (Christeen) and their children, Angie, Heather (Whit) and Luke (Chris); as well as his honorary brothers and best friends, Wayne Arther Jr., Reynaldo Briceno and honorary son, Josh Pratz (Amy) and their children Bently, Paisley, Kensley and Mason.
Along with his parents, Charles was predeceased by his son, Charles Lee Ashburn-Armstrong Jr., twin brother to Darryl.
We will continue to spread his legacy through his grandchildren, ensuring that his love, wisdom, and work ethic live on. He will be greatly cherished and missed but forever remembered in our hearts.
It is also with profound shock and broken hearts that we announce the sudden passing of Darryl Buford Ashburn-Armstrong, affectionately known as “Bubba,” who left us unexpectedly on June 17, 2026, at the age of 24. He was the son of Charles Lee Ashburn and Dianna Armstrong.
Born on March 7, 2002, Bubba lived life with a wild soul and the sweetest heart. He was a man who brought boundless joy to those around him, known for a smile and an even contagious laugh that could instantly light up any room. There was only one Bubba, and his unforgettable spirit touched everyone he met.
A natural craftsman and outdoorsman, Bubba was happiest when he was riding dirt bikes, working the shop, or out on the water. Following a proud family tradition, he had a deep passion as a waterman. Above all else, he adored his niece and nephew, who were the light of his life.
Bubba leaves behind an irreplaceable void in our lives. He was gone way too soon, but the memory of his vibrant energy and beautiful soul will live on in our hearts forever.
A celebration of life for Charles and Darryl will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturday, July 25, at Corrotoman By The Bay Clubhouse, 1187 Corrotoman Drive, Lancaster.
Currie Funeral Home LLC of Kilmarnock handled the arrangements.
