OTTOMAN—Darryl “Kirby” Haydon, 62, of Ottoman passed away peacefully on February 26, 2026.
Born on January 23, 1964, to Meredith and Donna Haydon, Darryl was raised on the water and spent his life embracing all that it had to offer. From an early age, he found his calling along the shoreline, turning his love for the water into a lifelong career beginning at just 17 years old. Over the decades, he worked tirelessly oystering, crabbing and manning a fish boat or tugboat; a way of life that was more than a job—it was who he was. The tides shaped his days, and the water shaped his character: steady, strong, and deeply rooted.
Darryl was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. He is survived by his father, Meredith Haydon; his wife, Mary; his children, Colie, Cassie (Dexter) and Harley; his step-sons, Christopher and Creed Polen; and his step-daughter, Abbie Foster. He was a very proud “granddad” to Case Haydon and Collin Lewis. He also leaves behind his siblings, Cindi Wheeler (Jamie), Jeff Haydon (Jeanie) and Robin Ditch (Paul), along with many cherished cousins, nieces and nephews who will carry his memory forward.
When he wasn’t on the water, Darryl could often be found cheering on the Las Vegas Raiders, surrounded by family and friends, or spending time with his favorite dog, Regan. Known for his quick wit and sharp sense of humor, Kirby had a gift for making anyone laugh, often with a perfectly timed comment and a grin that let you know he was just getting started. His love for his team was matched only by his love for those closest to him. He valued simple moments and the joy of good company.
Darryl will be remembered for his hardworking spirit, his loyalty, his laughter and the deep love he had for his family and his way of life. His legacy lives on in the stories told on docks and dinner tables, in the hands of those he taught, and in the hearts of all who knew him.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
Currie Funeral Home LLC of Kilmarnock handled the arrangements.
