Amarantides and Christopher are running for District 4 school board seat:

The Rappahannock Record is conducting written interviews with candidates in contested races for local office in the November 7 election. The Northumberland school board candidates for District 4, John Amarantides and Betty B. Christopher, were asked the same three questions. Their responses are in alphabetical order and unedited for content.

• How do you plan to ensure budgeting and audit issues do not reoccur?

Amarantides: We need to insure we have qualified accountants (in-house or contractors) with oversight by school staff and our board performing periodic reviews. I have reviewed budgets for multiple U.S. Naval activities during my military career, it’s not rocket science.

Christopher: A new finance team is in place and prioritizes stringent fiscal oversight, implementation of corrective action and improvement in fiscal processes throughout the school division.  The school board plans to participate in the joint working group meetings with supervisors to review budgeting and audit updates. The school board also receives monthly updates on reconciliations and grant reimbursements at the regular monthly school board and board of supervisors meetings.
