Dickenson sets new record for annual Earth Day 5K

Ed Dickenson of Roanoke on April 15 set a course record of 17:42 in the third annual Run NNK Earth Day 5K in Heathsville. Jennifer Saam of Wicomico Church, took first place overall among female runners.

The race kicked off the first Heathsville Farmers Market of the season. Full race results can be found at runnnk.org.

“The race drew a record number of entries, and a nice mix of young and old, runners and walkers, ” said organizer Bill Kirby. “Our goal was to have an enjoyable event for the entire family. We had 15 members of the Northumberland High School Soccer team participate; and a Tot Trot and Easter Egg hunt for younger children. The weather was perfect, and I think folks really enjoyed the morning.”

Net proceeds will be used by the Run NNK Running Club to fund the development of a local youth running and fitness program, said Kirby.

Support for the race was provided by a variety of sponsors, including the Northumberland Association for Progressive Stewardship, Omega Protein, Northern Neck Electric Cooperative, Virginia Shoe Clinic, Montross Brewery, Abilities Abound Physical Therapy, Main Street Design, EVB, Essex Bank and Citgo Handy Stores.

“We are grateful for our sponsors and donors in helping to get this local event going,” said Kirby. “We look forward to growing this family friendly race going forward.”
