Ditchley cidery project receives county permits

HEATHSVILLE—A new cidery plans to open in the fall at historic Ditchley Plantation, 1571 Ditchley Road, near Kilmarnock.

By a 5-0 vote, the Northumberland board of supervisors on February 15 approved a conditional use permit to construct and operate a brewery on property zoned residential waterfront.

Following a related public hearing, District 4 supervisor Tommy Tomlin moved to approve the permit and District 2 supervisor Richard Haynie seconded the motion. The motion passed with support from District 1 supervisor Joseph Self, District 3 supervisor Jim Long and District 5 supervisor Ronnie Jett.

Property owner Catherine Calhoun indicated it is not a brewery, but that’s where the application fit.

She said there are 2,000 apple trees on the property and there will be a tasting room. She also noted the hours of operation will be limited and it will start out small…
