Doris V. J. Thornton

KILMARNOCK—Doris (Dorothy) Vernell Jones Thornton of Kilmarnock died Monday, August 29, 2022.

She was born July 20, 1940, to the late Georgia Ann Laws Jones and the late Norvell Jones.

She was member of Sharon Baptist Church in Weems and Macedonia Baptist Church in Newport News. She attended Lancaster public schools, with her senior year at A.T. Wright High School in White Stone.

Doris worked at the Tides Inn in Irvington, a sewing factory in White Stone, Zapata Haynie and Standard Products in Reedville, Chase Packaging Company in Newport News, and later in life volunteered with Hampton Public Schools as a Grand Foster Parent with the Head Start Program.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother, Bernard Jones.

She is survived by her brother, Erskine Jones; her children, Bernard Earl Thornton Jr., Victor Lydell Thornton and Karla Rena Thornton Gammon Beale; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

A graveside service was held Saturday, September 10, at Sharon Baptist Church Cemetery, Weems.
