During the Revolutionary War, local sailors defended the Northern Neck

At the start of the American Revolution, the British Navy quickly took control of Chesapeake Bay, moving troops and supplies to army outposts. In the Northern Neck, many local men joined the Virginia State Navy to protect villages and plantations.

With so much shoreline in Northumberland County, men rushed to serve aboard the Congress, the Liberty, the Protector, Oliver, Lark and Susannah.
