Edward L. Carter

OTTOMAN—Edward Lindsey Carter, born to the late Lindsey and Rebecca Lee Carter on December 21, 1928, in Lancaster passed away on September 28, 2019. He was also raised by his maternal grandparents, Edwin and Annie Lee.

He attended Lancaster County public schools and later joined the Army and served in the Korean War. He moved to Philadelphia, Pa., and married Margaret Coleman from Mollusk. They were married for 62 years and from that union they had Angela and Anthony. He was employed with the City of Philadelphia Public Works for over 30 years as a lineman, retiring at the age of 57 years.

He attended Vine Memorial Baptist Church and enjoyed being an usher for many years. He moved back to Virginia in 1994 and rejoined his home church, Hartswell Baptist. He enjoyed ushering, fishing, eating, traveling, gardening and telling jokes that would last forever.

He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers Leon, McKinley, Roosevelt, Avon and James. He was a kind and gentle man who will be sadly missed.

He is survived by his wife Margaret; two children, Angela Bethea (Jeffrey) of Magnolia, Del., and Anthony Carter (Glenda) of Philadelphia Pa.; three grandsons, Cornell Chamberlain (Shaahla) of Philadelphia, Mark Anthony Carter (Tenesha) of Philadelphia and Jeffrey Bethea II (Hailey) of Magnolia; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Anne Johnson and Doris Carter both of New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
