Emerson Gravatt’s legacy extends to Scottie Yard

Seldom a day went by when Emerson Gravatt and his dog, Fergus, didn’t visit Scottie Yard at Town Centre Park, 150 North Main Street, Kilmarnock. So it’s only fitting that The Emerson Gravatt Doggy Library was erected in his memory at the dog park.

“This was his spot,” said Kilmarnock community development coordinator Ashley Jones.

Gravatt, who died March 19, was a member of the Kilmarnock Town Council on and off for 20 years and was active in numerous community organizations as well as with the school system. His widow, Joan Gravatt, is a retired educator and chairs the Lancaster County School Board.

“It was because of his and, of course Joan’s, involvement with the schools that we have the educational component, the name library. It’s a place where you can ‘check out’ toys and return them….
