
Coach Todd Jones and the Essex High School Trojans weren’t about to have another close call against the Red Devils.
The unbeaten Trojans (12-0) held Lancaster High School to one of its lowest offensive outputs of the season and its only scoreless game of the season Friday, November 17, winning the Region 1A semifinal, 36-0, in Tappahannock.
The top-ranked Trojans have earned a home field advantage again this week in the regional championship game against second place Northumberland, a 42-26 winner over West Point in last Friday’s other semifinal. Essex will host the Indians at 1 p.m. Saturday, November 25. The winner moves on to the Virginia High School League Class 1 state semifinals December 2.
Lancaster earned a shot at top-dog Essex with a 28-27 win over Rappahannock in the regional quarterfinals November 10. It was the Devils’ first trip to the regional playoffs since 2015 and last Friday’s semifinal loss capped a 7-5 overall mark, one of Lancaster’s best efforts in recent memory.
