Essex slides by Northumberland, 14-6, in mud-bath for Region 1A championship

Essex claimed its 10th Region A football championship on a muddy field in Claraville last Saturday and will head to the Class 1 semifinal to face two-time defending state champion Riverheads.

An interception led to the go-ahead touchdown for Essex in the fourth quarter and time expired with Northumberland at the goal line as the Trojans held on for a 14-6 win.

Heavy rain and wind forced Northumberland to step away from it’s typical passing game and left the host and higher-seeded Indians at a disadvantage against a big, scrappy Essex backfield anchored by 270-pound running back Kevin Dameron.
