KILMARNOCK—A fire that damaged a building and two rides at the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department (KVFD) Carnival Grounds, 200 Waverly Avenue, Kilmarnock, is under investigation by local authorities and the Virginia State Police (VSP).
According to KVFD Firemen’s Festival president Cody Smith, the department was dispatched to a call at its own carnival grounds at 3:45 p.m. Friday, May 31, where firefighters found the Bingo stand on fire. The structure sustained heavy fire damage and two children’s rides, the canoe and fire engine rides stored inside the building, were damaged.
While on scene, Kilmarnock Police noticed the ticket booth door also was unlocked, said Smith. Additionally the doors to five other buildings had been opened and vandalized inside.
The fire and vandalism will not stop the carnival….
