First graders learn about seeds and pumpkins

Eleven members of the Chesapeake Bay Garden Club (CBGC) recently visited the five first grade classes at Northumberland Elementary School to present a program based on the book, The Saved Seed, by Brenda Moore and illustrated by Emily Lackey.

The book demonstrated how a pumpkin in the fall of year produces more pumpkins. When the seeds are scooped out, dried and then planted in the spring, new pumpkins will grow on long vines to be enjoyed in the fall, reported publicist Karen Luzuriaga.
