HEATHSVILLE—During October 16 through 22, libraries in the U.S. celebrate their friends.
The “friends of the library” is a group that raises funds for programs and other expenses not normally covered in the operational budget of a library. Northumberland Public Library has such a group.
The Friends of Northumberland Public Library has been hard at work this year funding the summer reading program, and recently a special visit to Northumberland Middle and Elementary schools by author Kathryn Erskine, said library director Jane Blue. Erskine won the National Book Award in 2011 for Mockingbird, a middle grade novel about dealing with loss and the challenges associated with living on the Autism Spectrum.
While not all libraries have friends groups, those that do realize a special bond among the library staff and the volunteers who give tirelessly….
