General Assembly committee action picks up steam as deadlines approach

Smith Point Sea Rescue representatives recently joined members of the Dredge the Little Wicomico River Advocacy Group, watermen and Northumberland County Supervisors A.C. Fisher Jr. and Charles H. “Chip” Williams IV to meet with Del. Hilliary Pugh Kent and Sen. Richard Stuart at the General Assembly in Richmond. Their mission was to encourage legislators to support budget amendments House Bill 30 376#3h and Senate Bill 30 376#2 to fund the dredging of the Little Wicomico River at the Smith Point jetties. The group had an opportunity to meet and discuss the issue with many delegates and senators and highlight the financial, social and safety impact the shoaling of the jetties is having on Northern Neck and transient boaters on the Chesapeake Bay. RICHMOND—Lawmakers continued their dealmaking and pushing bills through the committee process, with some bills making it to the House and Senate floors for votes.

Each chamber has until February 17 to take action on their respective bills before they cross over to the other chamber the following day, according to the Virginia Legislative Information System, lis.virginia.gov. Another deadline looming is the February 22 date for budget committees to complete work on their respective budget bills.

Finance

House Bill 1, to increase the minimum wage to $15 by 2028, passed the appropriations committee in a 15-7 vote January 28 and was read for the first time on the House floor January 30. No action has been taken on its companion bill, Senate Bill 1, assigned to the Senate Commerce and Labor Committee.
