General Assembly digs into budget proposals

RICHMOND—Facing a March 14 scheduled adjournment, members of the House and Senate have been adding amendments to their respective budget proposals along with finalizing any bills.

A conference committee will work for compromises in the now $200 billion biennial budget effective July 1, 2026, through June 30, 2028, before sending to Gov. Abigail Spanberger.

The General Assembly will consider any of the governor’s actions when it reconvenes April 22.

Both budget proposals include pay raises for legislators beginning in 2028. Currently delegates are paid $17,640, while senators are paid $18,000. The house budget would increase that to $45,000 ….
