George Richard Packett Sr.

George Richard Packett Sr.

WEEMS/RICHMOND—George Richard Packett Sr., 90, passed away peacefully on November 19, 2018.

He was born in Weems on October 13, 1928, to his parents, William Everett and Eudora Barrack Packett. He had five siblings, Allean McNeal of Lancaster, William Packett of Weems, Mary Bruce of White Stone, Marian Downer of Shallotte, N.C., and Graham Packett of Harrisonburg, all who have passed before him.

He is survived by his three children, George Richard Packett Jr. of Wicomico Church, Gayle Packett of Aylett and Valerie Deitz (David) of Wicomico Church; two grandchildren, Jason Deitz (Michelle) and Jaime Hanks (Brandon); and five great-grandchildren, all of Richmond.

George was a veteran and had proudly served in the Navy from 1948-1952, in part during the Korean War. He was most proud of his service aboard the S. S. Kearsarge (CV-33) as a 3rd class quartermaster and when he was stationed in Kodiak, Alaska.

After leaving the Navy, he started his own wholesale seafood business, Packett Seafood.

For 60 years, he delivered oysters and other seafood from the Northern Neck to markets and restaurants in the Shenandoah Valley, becoming known as “The Oyster Man” to many of his customers and friends.

Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, November 25, at Fairfields Baptist Church, Burgess. Burial will be private. The family will receive friends immediately after the service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Fairfields Baptist Church, P. O. Box 216, Burgess, VA 22432; or the Alzheimer’s Association, 4600 Cox Road, Suite 130, Glen Allen, VA 23060.

Currie Funeral Home LLC of Kilmarnock handled the arrangements.
