Gladiators retire Red Devils, 2-0, in Class 1 quarterfinal

Riverheads High School hurler Jackson Berkstresser won a pitcher’s battle that only yielded a combined 10 hits as the Gladiators edged Lancaster, 2-0, to end the Red Devils baseball season in a quick, one hour and ten minute Class 1 quarterfinal on Tuesday, June 9.

Berkstresser, a freshman, retired eight LHS batters and scattered three hits to get the shutout and advance the Gladiattors to the state semifinals, where they lost to eventual state champion, Patrick Henry, 13-1. Patrick Henry defeated Rappahannock in the Class 1 championship, 4-1. The Raiders had won state semifinal game, 5-3, over Chilhowie.
