Hazardous waste collections to begin

Waste Collection Event Schedule

The Northern Neck Soil and Water Conservation District and Virginia Cooperative Extension recently announced upcoming Household Hazardous

and Electronics Waste collection events. All events take place from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. The events include:

• Northumberland County, September 22, Northumberland Middle School parking lot, 175 Academic Lane, Claraville.

• Westmoreland County, September 29, A.T. Johnson Human Services Building parking lot, 18849 Kings Highway, Montross.

• Richmond County, October 20, Indianfield Convenience Center, 135 Recycling Road, Warsaw.

• Lancaster County, October 27, Kilmarnock Refuse Center, 320 White Pine Drive, Kilmarnock.

Have you recently purchased an older home or farm? Do you have aging parents or family members? Have you lived in your home for a while and feel the need to discard unused items?

If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, there is a good chance that you may encounter old containers filled with solvents, paint, pesticides, or any number of other possibly unknown chemicals. You want to get rid of them, but you realize that they could be poisonous, flammable or possibly even explosive. You have heard that improperly disposed chemicals can seep into the ground or make their way into waterways, or even wells, creating hazards for humans, pets and wildlife. You want to discard these items, known as Household Hazardous Waste (HHW), the proper way, but you don’t know how to do that. There is a solution to your dilemma.
