OTTOMAN—Hilda Carlton Courtney, 90, of Ottoman passed away peacefully at her home on December 5, 2022.
She is survived by her sons, Roland W. Courtney Jr. of Hernando, Fla., and Allan Courtney of Ottoman; grandsons, James Courtney of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Lt. Morgan Courtney (Ashleigh) of San Diego, Calif. (U.S. Navy); granddaughters, Taylor Marshall (Tyler) of Brandon, Fla., and Addie Courtney of Oceanside, Calif.; and two beloved caregivers, Crystal Bell and Kathy Hickman.
She was predeceased by her husband of 67 years, Roland W. Courtney; her parents, Edward and Josephine Carlton; brothers, Billy, Alvie and Joe Carlton; and sister, Verna C. Barnes.
Her life was defined by faith, love and a genuine kindness towards all people. She was a devoted wife, a nurturing mother, an affectionate grandmother and a faithful daughter.
Hilda was baptized at Lower King and Queen Baptist Church and was a member of Corrottoman Baptist Church for over 60 years, where she served in many capacities, including deacon, Sunday school teacher and WMU director. Her faith in Christ personified her life.
She was a long-time employee of N&P Style Shoppe. She had a “green thumb” for planting flowers and caring for her Christmas cactus and was also known for her canning of pickles and strawberry preserves and her yellow potato salad.
In later years, she became known as “Miss Hilda” yet advancing age never dimmed her sweetness and joy in others. She will be greatly missed by her family, church and community.
Visitation will be held from 3-5 p.m. Sunday, December 11, at Currie Funeral Home, Kilmarnock. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, December 12, at Corrottoman Baptist Church, Ottoman, Va. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Corrottoman Baptist Church, 48 Ottoman Ferry Road, Lancaster, VA 22503.
