Historic Christ Church & Museum (HCC&M) recently announced its 2026 Summer Speaker Series, featuring three historians and authors.
Each program will begin at 5 p.m. in the Bayne Center at Historic Christ Church, 420 Christ Church Road, Weems, and will include a wine and cheese reception with the speaker.
The series will open June 11. Author Tony Williams will present “All Men are Created Equal: The Declaration of Independence and Black Freedom Suits & Freedom Petitions.”
The Declaration of Independence asserted that “all men are created equal” and have natural rights and the right of self-government by consent, reported development director Jill Sears. Slavery contradicted these core principles of the Declaration of Independence as America’s creedal document.
Williams, a senior fellow at the Bill of Rights Institute, will examine how enslaved people were among the first to claim the Declaration’s principles of liberty, equality and….
