CALLAO—Homer Mead Lewis of Callao passed away peacefully on Sunday, April 26, 2026, at the age of 91.
Born the third son in a farming family, Homer grew up in Lara with his parents and 10 siblings. From an early age, he learned the value of hard work, helping his family with whatever needed to be done on the farm. He became the first high school graduate in his family, earning his diploma from Heathsville High School, Class of 1953.
After spending a summer on the fish boats in Reedville, Homer moved to New Jersey for new opportunities. He met his future wife, Antoinette “Bunny” Alessi, at a firehouse dance. Soon after, Homer was drafted into the United States Army. Homer was proud to serve his country, carrying a deep love of country and was a lifelong patriot.
The couple married in June 1958 and began their life together in Oklahoma during his time in the service. They later settled in Toms River, N.J., where they raised their family. Together, Homer and Bunny created a loving home with their two daughters, Kathleen and Susan.
Homer enjoyed being outdoors and tended to his vegetable garden for many years, both while living in New Jersey and later in Virginia. He was often found mowing his lawn, caring for his yard, or simply tinkering in the garage. Homer Mead cherished the time spent visiting with his siblings and neighbors, always enjoying their company, and lending a helping hand when needed. One of Homer’s greatest joys in life was hosting family dinners. He and Bunny enjoyed planning meals for their loved ones, filling their home with love and laughter, particularly during holiday and birthday celebrations.
Homer and Bunny shared a special love for animals. Over the years, they welcomed many dogs and cats into their home—often strays that Bunny could not turn away. Homer, with quiet affection, would indulge her kindness, building outdoor shelters and making sure each new addition felt at home.
Homer spent his career as a chemical operator before retiring in December 1996. Homer and Bunny moved to Virginia to be closer to family and their grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Pop.” Retirement did not slow him down—he remained active and could be found working every Thursday and Friday at Bill’s Body Shop in Lively, working well into his 80s. A man of routine and devotion, he faithfully took Bunny on their weekly Tuesday errands, often followed by a lunch date together. Homer was deeply committed to his Lord and church community, serving as a deacon and attending Sunday services and Wednesday evening Bible study.
Homer and Bunny shared nearly 65 beautiful years of marriage, a testament to their love and partnership, until her passing in May 2023.
Homer is preceded in death by his wife, Antoinette Alessi Lewis; his parents, Marsh Lewis and Lamont Luttrell Lewis; his siblings, Johnny Lewis, Melvin Lewis, Joseph Lewis and Jennings Lewis; and his son-in-law, David O’Connell.
He leaves behind his siblings, Cecelia Lewis, Thressa Lewis, Margaret Ann Lewis and Everett Lewis of Lara, Calvin Lewis (Judy) of Callao and David Lewis (Nancy) of Toms River, N.J.; his daughters, Kathleen Cochran (Michael) of Williamsburg and Susan Lewis of Callao; three grandchildren, Joshua O’Connell (Marina) of Sterling, Rebekah Morrison (Alexander) of Toano and Lily Lewis of Callao; four great-grandchildren, Emalyn and Owen O’Connell of Sterling and Jackson and Dean Morrison of Toano; and many nieces, nephews, cousins and loving extended family members.
