After a brief time teaching he served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War being stationed in Alamogordo, New Mexico, which he dearly loved. He returned to teaching in Tappahannock after serving and taught for 38 years, living in Tappahannock almost 50 years.

He married his beloved Otelia Rogers from Hacks Neck and had a wonderful 58 years together before her passing. He was also preceded in death by his nine siblings, Paul Revere (Ann), R. “Reds” Lindwood (Alliene), John Ryland (Ruth), Joseph “Snap” Chester (Lucille), Naoma Vanlandingham (Carroll), Ralph Manning (Marie), Eva “Biddie” Robertson Haynie (Warner), Raymond (Rose) and Iona Bliss Robertson.

He was blessed with six great-grandchildren Howard Carter Robertson IV, Aiden, Koby and Harper Robertson, as well as Deaton Warren and Dade Zoldork.

Snookie dearly loved playing golf with his son, reading a book on World War II and the Civil War, both of which he could recall who won what battle and when. He also loved the Washington Redskins and Western movies. He was fortunate to have married a fantastic cook and he always commented “why would I want to eat at a restaurant when I can get the best meal here at home.” Snookie was blessed with 96 years of fairly excellent health. He got to live in his beloved Reedville in his family home place where he was born on Main Street.

Visitation was held at 11 a.m. Saturday, December 30, and the service at noon at Fairfields Methodist Church, Burgess. Interment followed at Roseland Cemetery, Reedville. A reception followed at the church.
