As Old Man Winter struck a blow across Virginia around the holidays, temperatures overnight dipped into the 20s in some parts of the Northern Neck. Lynn Pritchard captured a gaggle of geese (above) standing on a frozen patch of Carter Creek at 10:25 a.m. on December 27. “That ice had to be reasonably thick to hold those heavy geese, especially since they were standing in a group,” said Pritchard. “We’re back near Church Prong on Carter Creek, on the point at the end of Glebe Road. I’m guessing that the water right there is about eight feet deep.
