KILMARNOCK—Iris Jeanette Leary, 87, of Kilmarnock passed away on March 20, 2024. She was born on February 14, 1937, and adopted by her loving parents Hilary Ashburn and Mary Wilson Leary in Camden County, N.C.
Iris graduated high school and attended the Women’s College at UNC and graduated with an associate’s in accounting. She married in 1956, and in 1957 she started her family. Being a stay-at-home mom, she enjoyed being able to watch her children grow up. She was a wonderful, loving mother.
Once her children were older, the family moved to Virginia and Iris went to work for the Civil Service at Fort Monroe. She worked there until her retirement, and had the wonderful opportunity to move back to her family’s land in North Carolina on the Pasquotank River. There she enjoyed playing on the river, went Shag dancing, which was one of her most favorite hobbies since youth, and enjoyed her grandchildren.
Her last years were here in Virginia with her daughter, and she was surrounded by love until her last day.
The family will hold a memorial service at a later date.
